DVD subtitles
DVD discs containing films will often include one or more DVD subtitles tracks. DVD subtitles will frequently have several language options, this allows the DVDs to be marketed in several countries where different languages are spoken, and saves manufactures have to issue several variations of the same disc with DVD subtitles in different languages. DVD subtitles are also frequently included so that deaf people or those who are hard of hearing will be able to enjoy the content of the DVD as well as people without hearing problems. Specialised DVD subtitles with closed captioning that will display text versions of sounds and noises other than just dialogue will be included so people with hearing problems have as a full an understanding of the film as anyone else could. DVD subtitles are also frequently used characters in a film speak with strong accents, this is typical of DVDs sold in China as the various dialects and accents that occur in China are often utterly incomprehensible to Chinese people from different regions, however a standardised form of the Chinese language is widely recognised all over the country, so DVD subtitles are common place.
An issue that can arise with DVD subtitles, especially with films produced by low budget studios, is that the DVD subtitles may frequently be inaccurate and contain mistakes. This is very typical of low budget films from Asia, especially some Kung-Fu and Anime films which frequently have extremely poor DVD subtitles. However for some people this can actually increase their enjoyment of the program as the poor DVD subtitling is often unintentionally humorous.
